November 24, 2017 — Every year, the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF/FEESO) recognizes November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and as the beginning of the annual White Ribbon Campaign in Canada.
“As educators, OSSTF/FEESO members understand that we have a unique obligation to take a central role in raising awareness about violence against women and girls,” said OSSTF/FEESO President Harvey Bischof. “Today and every day, we encourage all levels of government to provide funding and deliver comprehensive strategies to address this issue.”
November 25 also marks the beginning of 16 days of activism against gender violence.  Many OSSTF/FEESO members will set up commemorative displays in their work sites from November 27 to December 9. Federation will join all Canadians in commemorating December 6 as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women, and the sixteen days of activism will conclude with the recognition of International Human Rights Day on December 10.
“We are proud and grateful that so many of our members are so strongly committed to raising awareness and demanding action on gender violence. OSSTF/FEESO’s Status of Women Committee takes the lead every year in organizing campaign materials, developing our December 6th commemorative poster, and reminding all of our members of the extent to which gender violence still plagues our communities,” said Bischof.
